My chosen film is Ex Machina, my initial thoughts for the choice were that there is lots of design inspiration to take from this film, from the way the outside environment and landscape is incorporated into the interior, to the contemporary use of colours and materials in the spaces, and the technology used in the film.
The time period for the film is said to be set “10 minutes from now, meaning that if an AI robot existed in our reality we would be surprised, but not that surprised” the overall characteristics are modern, minimalist and contemporary.
3D images done in sketch up and finished in photoshop to highlight the spacious, sleek, minimal elements of the interior, and highlight how the muted darker tones inside make the outside surroundings come alive.
The iconic props in this film are also quiet minimal but they clearly define key insides into the story and the mind of Ava’s creator Nathan, along with Ava’s journey of self discovery,.

The main colour pallet for the film is muted neutral colours and dark hues with the exception of nature and the outside world, and red scenes, this is very symbolic of Ava being held in captivity and her journey to escape to the natural environment.
There is a strong use of natural materials in the film, stone from the outside is incorporated into the interior of the living space in its natural form. The glass windows bring the outside in. The concrete flooring is textured and has a slight roughness to it. Wood and metals are weathered fitting into the environment around them.
Hi Josie,
This is a great start to your research and it is clear not only do you understand the movie but also how to extract the inspiration from it. Really look forward to seeing this translated into 2d and 3d spaces.
