For weeks 3 and 4, we were asked to experiment  with creating our own yarns from single yarns, alternative materials and coloured or textured threads through twisting, plaiting and plying. Here, I took inspiration from the videos from this weeks home learning, and decided to make yarn from old fabric. The fabric I have used is from an old project which left offcuts from a pair of trousers I had been making. I am excited to see how this will work as a knitted piece, or with crochet, using the skills I learnt last week.

The top image shows the collection of my own yarns that I created through twisting and plying technique. I found this was easily achieved when using more yarns, as the colours showed up better compared to without. Using small flecks of gold worked really well in adding extra colour and texture to the new yarns.

I also experimented making and using T shirt yarns. For this I used scrap material from a trouser project, as mentioned above. I ended up experimenting with knit and crochet with this yarn, seeing how the yarn manipulated using the two different techniques. I found the yarn quite tough to crochet with, making it tricky to develop the crochet beyond the first chain stitch.

Below I have attached an image of an example if my own yarns in crochet stitch. The bottom blue yarn is the t shirt yarn material, and on top is the plyed yarn of three of four different yarns. As you can see the two form a rigid structure because of the build up of yarns used for these techniques.
