Ice

What worked? The melting of ice upon sugar paper had many unexpected outcomes. The initial unexpectance was that the paper didn’t dissolve in its entirety but became a jelly like substance whilst wet then hardened to its original form when dried out. The melting did manipulate the colours of the print thereby making it more abstract and had changed through the process of melting. The successful part of this experimentation was the section that was not manipulated by the ice. The dome protecting one area allows for a narrative within the print and a point of originality and clarity.

What didn’t work? Unfortunately due to the drying process, the recoil, rebinding and hardening of the jelly caused cracking; thereby making the material very delicate.

Was there anything new or unexpected that emerged from these processes?  The dome created within the ice that protected leaves from abstraction was unexpected and a point of success. I have ordered a new form of sugar paper which is thicker and hopefully will react better to the melting process. I will attempt this a few more times to see all possibilities through this process.
