        • Unperceived Existence
        • Climate Change

        • Deforestation
        • Sensation vs Reality

“If a tree falls in a forest

and no-one is around to hear it,

does it make a sound?”

The definition of sound is hearable noise. The tree will make a sound, even if nobody heard it, because it could have been heard. Yet, sound is scientifically defined as the sensation excited in the ear when the air or other medium is set in motion. Can something exist if it is not perceived by our consciousness?

This motif of a falling tree is directly comparable to bring awareness to the public surrounding deforestation. In 2017, one football pitch of forest was lost every second. How is this conceivable, does it need to be witnessed to be recognised?

Another element of interest is controlled environments; that emulate different atmospheres. The clearance of spaces and natural areas for poly-tunnels, greenhouses and tropical glass houses. Botanical gardens are representations of different climates for species of trees. Botanical gardens could be considered as zoos for plants. The protection, conservation, observation and appreciation for the plants within the Botanical gardens are in stark contracts with the disregards and ignorance of deforestation within places such as The Amazon, The Boreal Forest and areas of Africa and Australia.

Practical Experimentation planning:

  • Leave recording device and camera trap at different locations -Secure locations possibility of theft/ damage
  • Visit logging industry- Possibly restricted access due to Corona Virus
  • Locations of minimal human activity
  • Visit the Botanical Gardens
