On March 3rd, Ayça Atabey, a RAD Lab PhD student, presented at the Children, Interaction, and Design event organized by the University of Edinburgh’s Children and Technology group at Our Dynamic Earth. The event brought together a diverse and interdisciplinary community, encouraging discussions on how design affects children’s interaction, thinking, emotions, communication, learning, and enjoyment of their rights. During her presentation, Ayça discussed the design implications of fairness and the child’s best interests in the emotion AI (EAI) context. She emphasised the importance of the Information Commissioner’s Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC) and gaps in current data governance regimes by referencing the research conducted by the Digital Futures Commission (5Rights Foundation). She also underscored the significance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach when embedding a value-sensitive and ethical approach into design. During her talk, Ayça called for stakeholders to prioritize children’s best interests and listen to their voices to understand their expectations, vulnerabilities and needs before making decisions concerning EAI in educational settings.
