Year 1 medical student, Alexandra Thompson accepts our challenge to identify her top 5 spots to relax and chill in Edinburgh.
Turkish baths
The traditional Turkish baths at Portobello Swim Centre are the perfect place to unwind and de-stress. There is a steam room and three hot chambers to work your way through, increasing in temperature from warm to (very) hot. Cool down in the plunge pool afterwards to feel totally refreshed.
Topping & Company booksellers
This might seem like an odd suggestion but it is no ordinary bookshop. There is an old-style library feel with floor to ceiling book stacks and those rolling ladders you see in films. With complimentary tea and coffee and plenty of quiet places to sit, it’s easy to spend a few hours here with a good book… or two… or three.
Yoga studios
There is an abundance of yoga studios near central campus – Tribe and Soulshine are just a couple. You’ve probably heard about the benefits of yoga on physical and mental wellbeing, so why not give it a go? My favourite is the flow yoga at Tribe Quartermile.
The Jazz Bar
The Jazz Bar is open seven days a week until 3am and has a laid back, relaxed vibe. With an average of 23 gigs each week (and not just jazz), head to its cosy basement for a good night out.
The Saturday night ‘World Premiere’ quintet slot is always a laugh and I’d recommend their fiery homemade ginger beer with rum or vodka.
Dominion Cinema
The Dominion is an independent cinema that opened in 1938. The building is full of character and watching a film on the luxury leather sofas is a great way to relax. It’s a bit pricier than its more mainstream alternatives but I’d recommend getting a Groupon deal of two tickets for £11.95 which even includes some complimentary Pringles at evening screenings.
