学園祭の始まりは明治時代にさかのぼりました。1960年代になると、学園祭の形式化の開始、戦後の学生運動に大きく影響を受けました。最初は文化祭や体育祭から始まり、徐々に学生たちがイベントを企画・運営するようになりました。学園祭は、学生たちの創造性やリーダーシップを育む大切な機会です。今日の学園祭では、演劇や音楽、スポーツ競技、屋台、展示など、さまざまな活動が楽しめます。学校のコミュニティ中では、学園祭がとても人気のあるイベントです。それでも、学園祭は政治的なイベントではないように見えるかもしれませんが、実際には、学生たちが環境問題やメンタルヘルス、社会の正義などの重要な問題について話し合い、活動するイベントであります。（ニンモン）
Gakuensai can be traced back to the Meiji era. By the 1960s, Gakuensai was greatly influenced by the start of the formalisation of school festivals and the post-war student movement. Initially starting with cultural and sports festivals, students gradually began to plan and organise their own events. Gakuensai offers an important opportunity for students to develop their creativity and leadership skills. Gakuensai today provides a range of activities involving theatre, music, sports competitions, stalls and other exhibitions, making it one of the most popular events within the school community. Nevertheless, while Gakuensai may not appear to be political, it is in fact an event where students get to discuss and engage in activism on important issues such as environmental issues, mental health, social justice, etc. (Ningmeng)
今日の学園祭の政治的な側面について日本人の学生にインタビューしました。元々、学園祭は政治的な行事でしたが、今は少し違います。全体的には政治的な行事ではありませんが、まだ政治的なサークルがあります。学生はマルクス主義の代わりに現在の学園祭の政治はフェミニズムと言いました。そのうえ、学園祭はまだ学生によって運営される行事です。今、運営サークルに入る学生は学園祭を運営します。 （ジェス）
We interviewed the Japanese exchange students about the political aspects of the Gakuensai events that they have attended. Originally, Gakuensai was a political event, but nowadays Gakuensai is not political in the same way it used to be. On the whole, Gakensai is not political anymore, however there are still political student societies that are involved in the event, so there are still political aspects to Gakuensai through these student socities. One of the students I interviewed said that in her experience, there are only political societies at university Gakuensai events, and not at the high school ones. A different student said that instead of the original Marxist politics, she thinks that the politics of modern day Gakuensai involve things like Feminism. Even though the political aspects may have diminished, modern day Gakensai is still a student-run event in the spirit of the original. It is normally run by a group of students who sign up to a Gakensai organising group, rather than being organised by the university staff. (Jess)
日本の学生にインタビューしたところ、彼らは学園祭での積極行動主義(せっきょくこうどうしゅぎ)が１９６０年代には一般的だったが、今はあまり一般的ではないと言いました。以前は学園祭は政治的な情事だけど、今は違う。今、学園祭は学生が責任(せきにん)を持って、活動を計画(けいかく)する景気(けいき)があります。学生はときどき、学園祭を利用して、社会の不正、ジェンダー問題(ーもんだい)、環境問題(かんきょうもんだい)などに関する意識(いしき)を高めます。そのために、学園祭は今学生にリーダーシップのやくわります。学園祭は楽しいことをする機会だけでなく、ときどき政治の問題について考え(かんがえ)察せるためにもつかわれます。(エマ)
When I interviewed Japanese students, they said that while activism at gakuensai was common in the 1960’s, it is less common now. Gakuensai was previously focused around political activism but it’s not so much now. Now, gakuensai allows students to have the opportunity to take responsibility and plan activities. Students sometimes use school festivals to raise awareness about social injustice, gender issues, and environmental issues. Therefore, through interviewing Japanese students and engaging in research about gakuensai I found that, now gakuensai provides students with leadership opportunities. However, gakuensai is not only an opportunity to have fun but is also sometimes used to help students bring awareness to political issues. – Emma
2月には、エジンバラ大学の学園祭が開催されました。日本の学生たちはインタビューで、学園祭は外で春に開催されると言っていましたが、実際には2月で寒すぎたため、学園祭は大学の中で行われました。この違いにもかかわらず、学園祭は成功を収めました。私たちのグループの一部のメンバーは、おいしい抹茶クッキーを焼いて、それを屋台で販売しました。屋台では、折り紙のアクティビティが用意されていました。テーブルの上には、様々な色の折り紙が並べられ、参加者は自分の好な紙を選ぶことができました。さらに、テーブルには折り紙の作り方が分かりやすく書かれた説明書も準備されており、誰もが簡単に折り紙を楽しむことができました。この学園祭は楽しいもので、屋台に来た人々も楽しんでいました。(ソニア)
In February, the Japanese department of Edinburgh university hosted its Gakuensai. During the previous interview, Japanese students had mentioned that the Gakuensai is usually held outdoors and during spring, but due to the chilly weather, the festival was held indoors instead. Despite this change, the festival as a success. Some members of our group baked delicious matcha cookies and sold them at our stall. At the stall, there was also an origami activity available. Various colored origami papers were laid out on the table, allowing participants to choose their preferred ones. Additionally, clear instructions were provided on the table, making it easy for everyone to enjoy origami. The festival was a delightful experience, and attendees at our stall had a great time.(Sonia)
全体的は学園祭はとても楽しいエベントだと思いました。皆さんの売店は良いでした。様々な売店があります。私の一番好きな売店は習字でしたが、習字が上手じゃないです。(ジェス）
Overall, I think Gakuensai was a great success. Our stall was enjoyed by many people, and we also had a good opportunity to experience other people’s stalls. Everyone in the class worked hard on their stalls to make a very fun event. There was a wide variety of activities that we could try at Gakuensai, from calligraphy to quizzes to games. Personally, my favourite stall was the calligraphy one, even though I wasn’t very good at it. (Jess)
