The ‘Hybrid Teaching’ project team in the Biomedical Teaching Organisation (BMTO), CMVM, and the Edinburgh Medical School Digital Education Unit would like to thank the hybrid teaching team in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh led by Prof Tim Drysdale (incl. his colleagues Fraser Millar and Ania Domagala) as well as Euan Murray, Karen Harris and Lesley Greer from the IS Learning Spaces Team. Tim’s exceptionally valuable work on the hybrid approach in Engineering and the Learning Spaces Team’s extremely prompt and supportive help in terms of making the technology work (e.g. installing Teams as a desktop app on the McEwan Hall lecture theatre computer desktop) made our testing of processes and technology a very smooth experience in such a large organisation. A special thanks also goes to Stephen Smith in the IS Applications Service Management Team for taking the time to support the Digital Education Unit regarding Microsoft Teams at a time when Teams was rarely used for teaching at the University. It shows that if one manages to get the right people together in one room in a timely manner the hybrid teaching approach can work without much financial or temporal expense. Finally, our grateful appreciation goes to Gavin McLachlan for pointing us to the right direction and facilitating key IS contacts.

After having completed the iterative cycle of development, design, implementation, testing, and ironing out last issues the BMTO was ready to go live with their version of the hybrid teaching approach when students were expected to return in January 2021. Unfortunately, this was not to be as lockdown was extended. The BMTO is planning to go live with this approach in September instead. The EMS Digital Education Unit developed support materials for staff and students (e.g. checklists and other support documents) regarding this approach and is happy to share these with interested parties.
