Academic support: Ensuring equality and inclusivity for all students

Academic support should meet the needs of a diverse cohort of undergraduate and postgraduate students during their time at the University. This has been particularly challenging during the recent pandemic. Consequently, delivery models have been redesigned to ensure that support is appropriate, inclusive, and available for students who are studying while on-campus, hybrid, or at a distance. Drawing from current research; a pilot study (survey and interviews); an academic support model offered to online distance students by the Institute for Academic Development; as well as those embedded in Schools, an academic transitions roadmap (ATR) model has been developed.

The ATR presents academic support positioned into three transitional stages: on entering, throughout, and on exiting the university. The poster presents some of the findings from the pilot research study. Supporting a diverse student cohort and ensuring inclusivity and equality requires a range of factors to be considered, including accessibility and technological appropriateness. We propose a number of recommendations alongside the model, with the aim that others consider these when delivering or signposting to an Academic Transitions Roadmap. The video provides further insight into the academic support offered at the University.
