グループ２：２年生の学園祭ブログ

Last year, gakuen-sai was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown policy, which heavily limited the types of activities we could organize. Instead of setting stalls as what students had done in pre-covid years, each team had to set up their own Teams meeting. Most of the groups made online games that related to various aspects of Japanese culture such as Kahoot quizzes. The form of the online meetings also did not work well enough to provide a comfortable social environment for everyone. Many people kept their cameras and microphones off for network reasons or personal preferences, resulting in insufficient interaction during activities.

去年、コロナの流行やロックダウン政策に影響されたので、学園祭はオンラインで行われて、学園祭のイベントの種類も制限されました。皆さんはほとんど食べ物やアニメなどの日本文化についてkahootのようなオンラインのクイズを作りました。そして、オンライン会議の形式のため、皆さんが快適に交流できる環境を提供できなかったと思います。多くの人がネットワークの問題や個人的な好みのためにカメラとマイクをオフにしていたので、イベント中のインタラクションが不十分でした。

However, the on-campus gakuen-sai this year was completely different from the previous one. It felt the same as what Anna thought on the coronation day of Elsa that “there’ll be actual real live people” in Frozen (just joking lol)! We set the actual stalls and arranged events that require face-to-face communication and interactions, such as selling reading tarot, doing duck fishing games, and singing karaoke together. In addition, we were able to arrange various food and drinks stalls this year. There were stalls selling homemade desserts and Japanese food and drinking including onigiri and sake.

しかし、今年のキャンパスで行われた学園祭は去年のとは全く違うものになっていました。みんなでプロジェクトルームで顔を合わせてコミュニケーションをとるようなイベントやゲームができました。多くの学生は屋台を出店したり、タロット占いをしたり、アヒル釣りをしたり、カラオケをして思い思いに楽しんでいました。また、今年の学園祭では多くの飲食屋台も出店できました。自家製スイーツや軽食を売る屋台があって、おにぎりや日本酒などの日本の食べ物や飲み物も買えました。

The first-year students in our group separated into two subgroups, that one sold choco bananas and another one did fortune-telling.

私達のグループの一年生は二つのチームに分かれて、片方のチームはチョコバナナを売ることをして、もう片方のチームは占いをしました。

Some of our second-year students did a Just Dance stall. One of the members had a Nintendo Switch and the Just Dance 2021 game installed. Another member borrowed a monitor. Because the game needed an internet connection to work, we had problems with setting up, also, it took us a while to find out how the volume worked on the monitor. Another member of the second-year group let us use their phone’s mobile data to make the game work. Because the quiz we did last year was completely online, we had less of an issue with the setup. I guess we have become so used to an online world that we don’t know how to prepare for reality anymore (haha). But we were also very proud of the fact that we were able to prevent the spread of Covid 19 through using hand wipes and hand sanitiser to wash peoples’ hands and the switch controllers between each use. The Just Dance stall had a slow start but turned out to be very successful – even the Japanese language teachers participated, and we were defeated by their dance moves. Hopefully, we can challenge them to a re-match and someday take their place as Gakuen-sai Just Dance champions!

２年生の中には、「ジャストダンス」の出店をした人もいました。メンバーの一人は、ニンテンドウスウィッチと「ジャストダンス2021」というゲームをインストールをしていました。また、別のメンバーがモニターを借用しました。ゲームのプレイにはインターネット接続の必要があるため、出店の準備に悩みました。それに、モニターでボリュームの仕組みを知るのに時間がかかりました。また、もう一人のメンバーがスマホのモバイルデータを使わせてくれて、ゲームを動かすことができました。昨年行ったKahootクイズはオンラインだったため、設定に問題があまりありませんでした。ネットの世界に慣れてしまって、現実にどう備えるか分からなくなっているのでしょう。しかし、コントローラーを使用するたびに、ハンドワイプやハンドサニタイザーで人の手で洗うなどのCOVID-19対策のため、感染を防ぐことができたことは、私達の大きな誇りです。「ジャストダンス」の出店は出足が鈍かったのですが、結果的には大盛況で、日本語の先生方も参加され、そのダンスに負けじと私達も参加しました。そして、いつか学園祭の「ジャストダンス」チャンピオンの座を奪いたいですね。

What we got about festivals from the interviews, in general, was that different universities celebrate their own festivals depending on the time of year. They also spoke a lot about a February Festival called ‘Setsubun’. Customs of this festival include eating Eho-maki sushi rolls and throwing beans around your house and shouting “Devils out, happiness in.” Another student mentioned that their favorite festival was the Obon Festival, an annual festival for commemorating one’s ancestors. It is typically held between July and August depending on the area in Japan. This student also mentioned how they hung lanterns in their neighbourhood and visited graves of family members to do food offerings. The lanterns are put into rivers and lakes at the end of the celebration to guide the dead back to their world.

お祭についてのインタビューで分かったことは、全般的に、大学によって時期によってお祭が違うということです。また、「節分」と呼ばれる2月のお祭についてもよく話してくれました。この祭りの風習は、恵方巻を食べたり、家の周りに豆をまいて「鬼は外、福は内」と叫んだりすることだそうです。また、別の学生は、好きなお祭りは「お盆」だと言っていました。お盆は、先祖を記念するための年に一度のお祭です。お盆は、時期が地域によってことなりますが、通常7月から8月にかけて行われます。その学生は、近所に提灯をつるし、家族の墓を訪れて食べ物を備えるとも言っていました。灯ろうは祭りの終わりに川や湖に流して、死者をあの世に戻れるように導くのだそうです。
