Gakuensai in Japan is a campus wide festival organised by the students. Various clubs prepare stalls and/or activities to showcase their clubs, these include clubs such as the calligraphy club doing big shodo, the basketball club playing a match, the film club analysing films, and many others. Other students that do not belong to a club do similar things, such as setting up stalls to sell food, or handmade products such as gloves, among other things. The students handmake and run the stalls themselves.

Our gakuensai in Edinburgh was not a campus wide festival like in Japan, however it was great fun! Our stalls were also set up by the students, and included alcohol tasting, karaoke, dancing and food selling, just like the stalls at the gakuensai in Japan. However the food sold in Edinburgh was mostly cakes, whereas in Japan there is a variety of foods that includes cooked foods such as takoyaki and yakisoba. Afterwards, we did not have a fireworks display like some school in Japan do, but we did go out for a celebratory drink at a bar. I’m sure the gakuensai at Edinburgh was as much fun as the one in Japan!
