Do I need to be using a lot of digital technology to take part?
No. This study is open to all instrumental and vocal teachers, whether you're fully digital, use a mix of tools, or mostly teach in traditional ways. This project wants to hear a wide range of experiences.
Who can take part in the nationwide online survey?
The survey is open to instrumental and vocal teachers working in the UK. You can be teaching in any setting (privately, in schools, music services, universities, conservatoires, or community programmes) and any musical discipline, including classical, contemporary, or musical theatre. As long as you teach in a one-to-one or small group environment, your contribution is welcome.
Do I need to be a full-time instrumental or vocal teacher?
No. You do not need to be a full-time teacher to take part. Responses to the survey are welcome from all instrumental and vocal teachers, including those who teach part-time, freelance, peripatetic, or alongside other roles. As long as you teach in a one-to-one or small group setting (in any style or instrument), your experience is valuable to this research. You may take the survey

Can I still take the survey if I’m also doing the interview?
Yes, and it is encouraged!
Each part of the study offers a different way to contribute. You can take part in just one part, or more than one if you wish. All instrumental and vocal teachers can take part in the online anonymous survey straight away.

Can students and parents take part in the interviews too?
Yes. We are keen to hear from students and from parents or carers who are involved in supporting a child’s music learning. Your insights are an important part of the research.

Interviews can last around an hour, but might be longer or shorter depending on what you have to say! They are informal and flexible, and can be scheduled at a time that suits you. Interviews can take place in-person, online via Zoom, Teams, or another platform you’re comfortable with.

What will I be asked in the interview?
All interview participants (teachers, parents and students) will be asked about their experiences with music lessons, particularly around any use of digital tools or technologies (e.g. apps, online teaching, backing tracks, recordings, communication tools, etc.). You don’t need to prepare anything in advance, just come ready to chat!
