Vivien Kellems (1896–1975) was an American entrepreneur, inventor, and prominent advocate for women’s rights and tax reform. Born on June 7, 1896, in Des Moines, Iowa, Kellems possessed an independent spirit and a determination to challenge societal norms.
After completing her undergraduate studies in the United States, Kellems pursued her graduate education at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She enrolled in the university’s School of Social Science, where she specialized in economics and political science. She founded Kellems Cable Grips, a manufacturing company that produced devices used in the electrical industry. Her innovative cable grip designs revolutionized the industry, and her company thrived under her leadership. In addition to her entrepreneurial pursuits, Kellems became known for her fierce opposition to the federal government’s practice of withholding income taxes from employees’ wages, leading to a significant legal battle against the government.
