Sreath ùr a’ comharrachadh 70 bliadhna de Sgoil Eòlais na h-Alba, 1951-2021. A new series marking 70 years of the School of Scottish Studies, 1951-2021.

With thanks to all the presenters, staff at BBC Radio nan Gàidheal and at the School of Scottish Studies Archives.

Anna weare glasses and a white t shirt. She has long dark hair and looks directly at the camera, smiling.

Anna MacQuarrie presents her pick of archive recordings of Archie Maclean, Mull.

Tha an t-sreath phrògraman ùra Sgaoileadh an Eòlais a’ cur ris an t-sreath Sruth an Eòlais, a chaidh a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2001, agus tha an dà shreath a’ toirt an àireamh phrògraman a tha BBC Radio nan Gàidheal air craoladh airson 70 bliadhna de Sgoil Eòlais na h-Alba a chomharrachadh am-bliadhna gu dè eile ach 70 prògram!

Tha an luchd-lìbhrigidh a’ tighinn à sgìrean eadar-dhealaichte le ùidh is eòlas ann a raon farsaing  de chuspairean, le cuid air a sin a thogail bho làrach-lìn Tobar an Dualchais agus cuid a bha eòlach air an tasglann cheana. Tha prògraman againn bho Mhairead NicDhòmhnaill a bha uair ag obair aig Tobar an Dualchais, Joy Dunlop, Iain Mac a’ Ghobhainn, Alasdair MacIlleBhàin, Raghnaid Sandilands, Anna NicGuaire, Nicola NicThòmais, Ailean Dòmhnallach à Dun Èideann, Bill Innes, Gillebrìde MacIlleMhaoil, Ailean Mac an Tuairnear, Dòmhnall Màrtainn, Jo NicDhòmhnaill, Maighread Stiùbhart, Catrìona Mhoireach aig UHI, Maighread Callan agus Catrìona Nic-a-phì.

Tha iad a’ taghadh bho na tha taisgte leis an Urr Uilleam MacMhathain, an Urr Tormod Dòmhnallach ( à Bhaltos san Eilean Sgitheanach), Dòmhnall Ruadh Phàislig, Donnchadh MacDhòmhnaill ‘ac Dhonnchaidh à Peighinn nan Aoireann agus Eàirdsidh MacIllEathain às a Ros Mhuileach agus às na chruinnich Iain Patterson à Eilean Bheàrnaraigh.  Tha cuid dhiubh a’ toirt sùil air sgìre neo eilean fa leth leithid Tiriodh, Muile, Sleibhte, an t-Ìochdair, Earra-Ghàidheal agus na Garbh Chrìochan.  A thuilleadh air a sin tha cuid eile air cuspairean a thaghadh mar sgeulachdan os-nàdarra, obair calanais, aoigheachd, dibhearsan agus cur-seachadan do dh’ òigridh, cleachdaidhean obrach agus sealladh air dè a bh’ ann a bhith nad Ghàidheal aig toiseach agus meadhan na ficheadamh linn.

Sgaoileadh an Eòlais is a complementary series to Sruth an Eòlais, first broadcast in 2001, taking the number of programmes broadcast on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal to mark the School of Scottish Studies 70th birthday to, yes, you’ve guessed it, 70 programmes!

We have a selection of presenters from different backgrounds and fields of interest, some who have come to appreciate the collection on Tobar an Dualchais since the first series was broadcast and some old hands who were already familiar with the archive.  We have programmes from Mairead MacDonald ex-Tobar an Dualchais, Joy Dunlop, Iain Smith, Alasdair Whyte, Raghnaid Sandilands, Anna MacQuarrie, Nicola Thomson, Allan MacDonald from Edinburgh, Bill Innes, Gillebride MacMillan, Allan Turner, Donald Martin, Jo MacDonald, Margaret Stewart, Catriona Murray from UHI, Mairead Callan and Catriona MacPhee.

The topics range from the rich sources of Rev Willie Matheson and Rev Norman MacDonald ( Valtos, Skye),  Donald MacIntyre ( Dòmhnall Ruadh Phàislig), Duncan MacDonald ( Donnchadh MacDhòmhnaill ‘ac Dhonnchaidh, Peighinn nan Aoireann)  and Archie MacLean from the Ross of Mull and the fieldwork of Iain Patterson from Berneray.  Other programmes focus on one area or island, such as those on material collected from Tiree, Mull, Sleat, Iochdair, Argyll and the Rough Bounds. There are also those on subjects such as the supernatural, wool-spinning, highland hospitality, pastimes for children, the rich lexicon ensuing from traditional croft work and on what it meant to be a Gael a century ago.
