A Vet School of Our Own

A Vet School of Our Own

Hi!

My name is Lisa and I am about halfway through my GEP year at Edinburgh. Right now, we are about a week away from exams. What I can tell you for certain from my three-ish months of experience is that school is…hard. No matter where you go, vet school is always going to be hard because we are learning to do a hard job. As Jimmy Dugan says in A League of Their Own, “It is the hard that makes it great.” That hard can be really, really fun when you are with and surrounded by passionate and caring people. You can have the most advanced equipment in the newest of buildings but if you do not fill those buildings with the right people your equipment will not work. From staff to faculty to students, I believe that Edinburgh fills its beautiful buildings with the most sincere and encouraging people. I wish I could describe the feeling of being here from day-to-day better, the best way might be to say that it feels like “the opposite of loneliness” as coined by Marina Keegan.

Here are some highlights from our first 100ish days:

  • Class hike up to Arthur’s Seat!
  • Learning how bovine joint structure affects their dance mooooves!
  • Taking a study break to watch the fireworks show when the Fringe closed!
  • Post AB1 exam dance party!
  • White coat ceremony picture being photobombed by a stealthy Labrador!
  • Please ask me why we have to make hay while the sun shines! It makes me so happy!
  • The persistent smell of cookies in the foyer due to the numerous bake sales!
  • A virtual tour of the Pentlands to play parasite detectives!

Until next time, have great days!

🙂 L
