‘Commemorating the dead of the Second World War’ – round table event
In October 2025, the Official Historian of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), Dr George Hay, presented the findings of the second report from the CWGC’s Non-commemoration programme, this time on the Second World War. The CWGC has undertaken a five-year global programme addressing historical inequalities in commemoration of the two world wars. Their first Non-Commemoration report, issued in 2021, identified inequalities in the way the CWGC commemorated the First World War dead of the British Empire and work has continued on the Second World War in East Africa, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. Dr Talat Ahmed from the School of History (Edinburgh) gave a formal response. The full report can be found here:
