My experiences of moving to Edinburgh as a postgraduate

By Jiayi, from China, studying Language Education

I’m Jiayi and I did a Master’s in Language Education. I’m originally from China and I graduated from my postgraduate degree at Edinburgh in December 2023. I’m now working as a civil servant in the public sector in Edinburgh. So, I can say that I see Edinburgh as my second home town because I love the people, the city and practically everything here.

Adapting to postgraduate study at Edinburgh

Basically, the last year of my undergraduate I found it to be comparatively relaxing, but the one-year Master’s programme at Edinburgh, I felt, ‘Wow – I’ve became a different person!’ That’s because it was very stressful for me….different structure, different situation. Everything’s different here. But after one year, you feel like you’ve really achieved something major and, you know, I came out of it feeling really good about myself.

If English is your first language, I think you’re going to find it easier. But if English is your second language, you may find it a little bit stressful, like I did, especially at first. But you will handle it because the whole student support system is really good. They regularly checked in on me, as did my supervisors. It was good to feel fully supported.

Finding a job at the end of your studies

I did use the Careers Service at the University but it is useful to know that if you do want to find a job here in Edinburgh after graduating, that you might have to be patient because typically there will be fewer job opportunities than there are in London. I had to apply for so many jobs before finally getting one. But if you absolutely want to stay in this country or in this city, I’m certain there will eventually be an opportunity for you!

Adapting to Edinburgh life

The weather can be a shock for some. It’s true that the dark winter months might come as a surprise if you’re not used to living in the UK, but they will typically only last from December to February.

And when it comes to July, August and September, life is just wonderful!  Edinburgh is like another paradise. But you can enjoy the paradise the whole year-round if you’re prepared for the winter time.  It might get dark early for several months, but it’s not that cold.

Finding accommodation in the city

I think I got the offer about the end of February and then the first week of March, I booked University-owned student accommodation. My advice would be once you have decided to come to Edinburgh University, then book the accommodation as soon as you possibly can.

One piece of advice for anyone considering moving to Edinburgh

I think I will say just enjoy your life here. Don’t over-plan your future. Before I came here, I promised my parents I definitely will go back home. But here I am, still happily living in Edinburgh. So, you never know what will happen. It’s a very magical city. So, enjoy your life and congratulations if you can get an offer from Edinburgh University. It’s not easy!
