Ringing in the New Year above the crowds

Fireworks from Calton Hill.
Reading time: 2 minutes

By Holly, from Scotland, studying Classical Studies

When it comes to ringing in the New Year, few cities rival the energy and grandeur of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations. The Scottish capital transforms into a festive wonderland as midnight approaches. From lively street parties to mesmerising light shows and, of course, some of the most spectacular firework displays in the world.

While many choose to immerse themselves in the official Hogmanay Street Party along Princes Street, there is a more serene – and free – option lying just a short climb from the city centre. Calton Hill, one of Edinburgh’s most iconic viewpoints, offers a breath-taking vantage point for watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks without the need to purchase a ticket.

Discovering Calton Hill

Situated just east of Princes Street and easily accessible on foot, Calton Hill is renowned for its impressive monuments, including the Acropolis-inspired National Monument, the Nelson Monument, and the Dugald Stewart Monument.

On an ordinary day it’s a peaceful oasis, providing panoramic views of Edinburgh’s Old Town, New Town, and the Firth of Forth beyond. Come 31st December, however, the Hill takes on a more festive air, as small groups of locals, students, and travellers arrive to witness the midnight pyrotechnics.

What makes Calton Hill so special on New Year’s Eve is the unique perspective it offers. Instead of craning your neck in the thick of tightly packed crowds, you can settle on its slopes or near the monuments to watch the fireworks soar above Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens below.

The city’s iconic skyline, punctuated by spires and the commanding fortress, forms an unforgettable backdrop to the dazzling display, making it a dream spot for photographers and anyone hoping to capture the magic of Hogmanay.

Preparing for a memorable night

A major draw of Calton Hill is that it remains open to the public free of charge. Whilst attending the official Hogmanay Street Party involves purchasing tickets, and navigating security checks, here you are free to stroll up at your leisure and claim a spot. That said, it’s wise to come prepared.

Edinburgh can be chilly in late December, so wrap up warmly and consider bringing a thermos of hot chocolate or even a wee dram of whisky to keep spirits high. Arriving early helps ensure you secure a comfortable position, and a blanket or a folding chair can make the wait all the more pleasant. The slightly quieter mood on Calton Hill allows for reflection, conversation, and the chance to appreciate the spectacle in all its colour and brilliance.

If you’re searching for a free and memorable way to usher in the New Year in Edinburgh, there’s no better vantage point than Calton Hill. Here, as the fireworks ignite the sky above a city steeped in history and tradition, you’ll find yourself swept up in the true spirit of Hogmanay.
