Whether it’s your very first welcome week or you are a returning student it is a good idea to plan ahead. Welcome Week is a fantastic opportunity to get familiar with what the University has to offer in terms of social and academic life alike. However, it can be overwhelming (after all there’s so much happening) so it’s better to be prepared. Below you’ll find three top tips that I think you might find helpful – they definitely helped me 😊
-
The Essential 6 Tasks
You’ve probably received emails about this, but apart from taking part in fun activities you will have some more mundane stuff to do too. It’s a good idea to make a list of the things you need to do (e.g., international check-in, registering with a GP, opening a bank account, collecting your student ID, etc.) and get them sorted as soon as possible. That will save you a lot of trouble later on 😊
The University’s website has a section on this and I always found it helpful to look through it.

The UoE Events App
It’s a good idea to download this app as it will have all the events organised at Uni during the Welcome Week. It will help you plan your schedule as it has the options of highlighting compulsory events for your specific degree. Additionally, you can also create your own “timetable” for different social events you want to attend.
Welcome Week can be overwhelming so having a nice schedule will be of great help.

Take Breaks
As I have said, Welcome Week can be overwhelming, so make sure you take care of yourself and take breaks from all the social activities (I used to do that towards the middle of the week). You can become tired or overwrought, so just remember that it is alright to take some “me-time” too.
- Besides, you don’t need to try everything during the Welcome Week. There’s another “Give It a Go” week at the beginning of the second semester and you can always attend events throughout the academic year 😊
But the most important thing of all is to find your own way of making the most of your Welcome Week – everyone’s different, so listen to your inner voice and follow your instincts. That will guarantee a wonderful experience.
And of course, don’t forget that after Welcome Week finishes, the teaching starts 😉
