The dark, cold winters this time of year might feel gloomy at first, but luckily, the city’s shiny lights and festive atmosphere are fast-appearing to brighten up your spirits! If you’re looking for some jolly ways to build your Xmas cheer this year, then you’ve come to the right place. Here’s a couple of the many merry activities to help you celebrate the festive season in Edinburgh…
Christmas Markets
It wouldn’t be a complete Christmas in Edinburgh without giving this iconic attraction a visit! Situated all the way along Princess Street, the markets include over 70 stalls selling a wide range of handmade crafts, festive foods and warming drinks. There are also some exciting rides to try out, including Scotland’s largest big wheel, the exhilarating Star Flyer and several family-friendly funfair games. The markets and rides are open every-day from November 15th – January 5th, from 10am-10pm. Entry is free, though tickets need to be bought for rides and are best to pre-book around busy times. If possible, try to visit in the mornings or on weekdays, as this popular attraction often draws big crowds!
Ice Skating
Just a snowball-throw away from the Christmas markets, the George Square ice rink is the perfect way to warm up on a wintery day out! As the rink is undercover it’s accessible in all weather, and this year festive drinks will also be on offer in the super cool ice-sculpted ‘Polar Bar’! Bookings are required, and a 20% discount is available for anyone with an EH postcode.
Botanic Gardens
The annual Christmas-lights display at the Botanics are a truly mesmerising sight! This illuminated trail is internationally-acclaimed, and enjoyable for all ages. It offers plenty of photo opportunities, as well as treats from pop-up food vendors along the way. This magical event runs from the 21st of November and ticket prices varying based on time slots, with off-peak ones post-7pm being the best value!
St Giles Concert
Another unique yet unmissable experience is the festive concert-by-candlelight held in the iconic St Giles Cathedral. Here, the live ensemble perform a medley of well-known and loved Christmas film tracks, creating an atmosphere of nostalgic charm. Be sure to book in-advance for this heart-warming event, as it will run for one-night-only on Saturday 14th December!
Santa Fun Run
Held on Sunday 8th December, this charity fun-run is in support of the national charity ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, providing special experiences to children with life-threatening illnesses. Taking place over a 2.5km circuit across Princes Street Gardens, the event is a great spectacle and features participants and pets dressed up in their best Santa & Elf costumes. Entries are donation-based, though kids and pets run-free, and there’s even a prize for the best-dressed Santa-Paws!
