7. The stained glass window

The stained glass window that is currently visible from the second and third floors of the building is dedicated to Rev. Thomas Cochrane, who was the first minister of Pleasance United Free Church. Rev. Cochrane died in July 1902.

The window was designed and produced under the direction of Mr. John Taylor Stewart, the chief artist to Messrs. William Meikle & Sons of Wellington Street, Glasgow.

It was the first window in Edinburgh to be produced without any surface pigment. According to a local newspaper report of the time, the flesh parts are cut out of glass “like a cameo”. The cameo glass is made by fusing together several layers of coloured glass. The outer layer(s) Is removed to produce the finished product.

This stained glass window was originally installed in the Pleasance United Free Church in January 1906, but was transported to South College Street between 1910 and 1912.
