Meet the Research Team

Lead Researcher: Menchie Leung

Biography:

I received my BA in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University and MEd from The Education University of Hong Kong. As a musician, I have been teaching piano and music classes and performing as a piano accompanist for over a decade. My devotion and passion in music education inspired me to look further into how music can support emotions and wellbeing in everyday life. This brought me to complete a master’s thesis on the mediating roles of emotions between music engagement and wellbeing in Hong Kong adolescents, under the supervision of Dr Rebecca Y. M. Cheung, as well as to publish my first journal article in Psychology of Music. My experiences as a research assistant allowed me to learn more about mental health and child adjustment. I started my PhD at the University of Edinburgh in September 2021 under the supervision of Prof. Katie Overy and Dr Aja Murray. I am exploring the ways in which young music learners can develop emotion regulation skills for a healthier psychological life, and cultural differences between Hong Kong and United Kingdom contexts.
