Students and staff from BSc Oral Health Sciences (BSc OHS) participated in the annual Restart a Heart Day, teaming up with British Heart Foundation and Surgeon’s Hall Museum to deliver CPR training to members of the public visiting on 16 October.
This year saw the fourth anniversary of the event with Surgeon’s Hall and the busiest one yet! Students managed to engage with 100 visitors in total and 68 members of the public were taught crucial lifesaving techniques.
Visitors ranged from school age children to retirees. While some were eager to refresh and practice their skills many others were offered their first opportunity to see and work with an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Basic life support is a fundamental element of training for dental therapists and a compulsory part of the BSc OHS curriculum which is refreshed every year. Students were able to provide hands on demonstrations using Resuscitation Annie and educate visitors on the key steps to successful resuscitation.
They were joined by Angela McCormack from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) who ran an information stall on cardiac disease, the support available from BHF and the new BHF RevivR™ app.
The BSc staff and students have been welcomed back to Surgeon’s Hall Museum on 1 November to participate in the annual ‘An Evening with Surgeon’s Hall’.
Here they be will be offering further CPR and AED training. Alongside this there will be also be an interactive stand looking at the comparison of archival dental equipment with modern equipment used today.
