  • Pareidolia of apophenia (Our visual system is very slow, it takes hundreds of milliseconds to process its data in the brain, therefore time is of the essence and what the thalamus sends to the cortex is in effect a hastily drawn approximation)
  • Case: Petroglyph
  • Explaniation of the phenomenon as natural mineral accretions and their modifications was met with incredulity.
  • Building our own conspiracy theory: Internal truth vs External truth, a permission to believe .
  • Apopheny is delusion-as-revelation, symptom of onset-schizophrenia.
  • My case research: Ancient hieroglyphics.
  • Ancient Egyptian writing: The word hieroglyph literally means “sacred carvings“. The Egyptians first used hieroglyphs exclusively for inscriptions carved or painted on temple walls. This form of pictorial writing was also used on tombs, sheets of papyrus, wooden boards covered with a stucco wash, potsherds and fragments of limestone.
  • Sumerian ‘cuneiform’: Sumerian cuneiform is the earliest known writing system. Its origins can be traced back to about 8,000 BC and it developed from the pictographs and other symbols used to represent trade goods and livestock on clay tablets. Originally the Sumerians made small tokens out of clay to represent the items. The tokens were kept together in sealed clay envelopes, and in order to show what was inside the envelopes, they press the tokens into the clay in the outside.
  • Reflective analysis: How to explain that these hieroglyphics exist in a belief system or considered as a pareidolia of apophenia? How they might concerned as a work of art?
