WEEK 1
Initial Ideas
Photographs of found objects
I found photographing the objects in their natural setting more spontaneous and raw than physically picking them. Looking through my photos, I discovered a new skill of mine: perspective distortion. Some of my photos were taken in such a way that they appear to be different (or transform the appearance of an object by capturing it from a different angle). Although this allowed me to see the objects from different angles, it made finding connections between the photographs tricky.
WEEK 2
I discovered these mesmerising shadow patterns cast by the trees in my room one day. The subtle movement and interaction between positive and negative spaces were visually striking. The silence in the shadows was both chaotic and calm. This inspired me to depict the essence of the city through the fine details that we overlook.
WEEK 3
I knew I wanted to experiment with new mediums from the start of the project, and learning about light gave me the confidence to investigate sound as well. This time, I decided to experiment with various mediums and let the medium speak to me. I wanted the medium to be the subject. I recorded familiar and everyday sounds. I didn’t go out of my way to record because I wanted to see and hear the city through my eyes and ears.
I studied light and sound by juxtaposing them and found that they enhanced one another without losing their qualities. It was almost as if the piece was portraying the theme in two different forms. I liked the concept of using contrast. How easily and frequently we overlook natural occurrences ranging from the obvious, such as sound, to the subtle, such as shadows.
WEEK 4
Although the piece appears to be completed, I believe the sound work has room for improvement and could elevate the piece with a little more experimentation. I believe I can add to this piece in the future.
