Week 8 – Site Visit

15/3/24

In Week 8 of the course we all went on a site visit to look around a hotel. The hotel we looked around was the ‘Moxy’ hotel in Edinburgh Fountainbridge. Advertised as a playful hotel to inspire creativity and offer space for both business and leisure travellers. The chain of ‘Moxy’ hotels is part of the Marriott Bonvoy company which controls many different chains of hotels ranging from regular to superior guest experiences.

We got the chance to look around the hotel lobby and one of the hotel rooms. The hotel lobby was on the ground floor and was a relatively large space. As you walked in there were the lifts and an entertainment area with seating.

You could check in at the desk which was attached to the bar and there was lots of seating around the bar with a large table for bigger groups and high stools with charging ports acting as a more individual space. I thought it was a good design decision to add both seating area for large groups as well as for smaller groups and individual travellers. Therefore, accommodating to every traveler.

There was further seating up a few steps from the bar with another large table with charging ports displayed as a working/meeting area. The lobby design was fun and playful as well as very functional. With lots of exciting colours and materials. There were a range of seating areas for different functionalities.  However, for the number of rooms the hotel has the lobby could have been larger.

We also had a look at the Moxy Queen sleeper room. The room was quite small but very functional. With a desk/vanity area and a small seat next to the bed it offered places to sit for guests. It had a bathroom with a sliding door to maximise room. The room also had lighting under the bed and around the mirrors which added a nice subtle touch. The colour palette mainly consisted of browns, greys, yellows and whites. I thought the design was sleek, modern and effective and carefully spatially designed for functionality and cost. Overall, the site visit to the Moxy Hotel gave me design inspiration for my project on how to layout the public and private areas and how to design a hotel lobby.
