Week 3 – Design Development

4/2/24

In Week 3 of the design project I have focused on developing my design as much as possible. Since the review feedback I have been developing my design, the materiality and colour choices in my sketch-up model and also making changes to my floor plan. In Week 1 and 2 I focused a lot on developing an initial shape for the hotel room. Which led me to designing an oval, curved room. Taking inspiration from Elrod House and other sets seen in the James Bond film.

I made a lot of changes to my initial design from Week 2 following on from the review feedback. Such as I changed the entrance to the hotel room from a regular door to a double sliding door. The reason for this design choice was because I want the user to experience the lifestyle of James Bond and of the film from the moment they set foot into the room, so it was important every detail in the room was carefully thought out. I also added an extra lounge chair into the space in order to accommodate for another person. This is because I tried to focus on how the user would use the space and the functionality of the design as a hotel room. As well as how James Bond would use the space. Normally he would invite guests round and socialise and make drinks for them. So in order to accommodate this into my hotel room the semi-circle sunken lounge area was the focal point of the room. I also wanted an area for drinks, this is because the James Bond character is commonly seen at bars. So adding in an area for cocktails coincided with the ‘James Bond’ theme.

Floor Plan Week 3 Development:

I also focused on developing the layout and design of the bathroom in the room in Week 3. I changed the layout of the shower by creating a curved slab of rock that embeds the user into the shower. Taking inspiration from the idea of organic architecture which is seen in Elrod house; one of the film sets in the film ‘Diamonds Are Forever’I also removed the shower door but kept the toilet door. This is because if felt it enhanced the users shower experience to be able to see the view whilst in the shower. I also wanted to keep the theme of the room being organic and fluid throughout the design of the form of the room. I also added another chair in the room with a foot stool and a large standing light. This is so two people can sit there instead of just one so it is more functional. As well, I thought the large standing light went well with the James Bond theme. I also spaced the two bathroom sinks further apart so there was more room and space and I also changed the structure of the bathroom sink/vanity area. This is because before it looked very rigid and it didn’t fit with the shape of the rest of the design of the room. I wanted the ovular shell of the room to still carry through to the bathroom whilst being functional. So it was important to make the sink top area fit with the hotel room design and concept.
