I am interested in The Art Assignment – Sarah Ulrist Green because I see this assignment as exploring art history and focusing on hands-on experience, which is an experiential learning process.
1.How might you consider your experience of this art assignment from a constructivist perspective?
After reading the first Learning Theory Example, I believe that thinking, learning and creating art tasks cannot be separated from their social context. As art students, we can use different art forms in our artwork to find our own direction and create our own artwork, but the content and content of the artwork created cannot be separated from society. I personally agree with the social constructionist view that students should learn by doing. From my previous learning experience, it is clear that art cannot be created in isolation from practice, and that the experience of previous generations is needed to create new work. No one can make a work of art entirely without practice, relying entirely on their own imaginary plans. Often we find new ideas and problems in the process of practice, and it is in the constant blending of prepared plans and changes in practice, and then solving the problems that have arisen, that we create unexpected artistic effects.
- How might you consider your experience of this art assignment from a connectivist perspective?
I think CONNECTIVISM is a very important point in learning. We need to ‘stand on the shoulders of giants’ and do our own independent and critical thinking in order to develop a fresh perspective and a newer view of the field we are exploring. As in the case of Green’s assignment, the process of exploring art history is bound to generate new ideas.
And information is very accessible in modern society, because of the internet, so academic connectivity and creativity has developed, and I think it’s like posting resources from all over the world on the internet, and scholars going about merging, integrating and introducing new ideas.
- How might you consider your experience of this art assignment from a critical pedagogy perspective?
Critical pedagogy is important in both academic writing and artistic production. Not all views passed down from history are adaptable to modern society, and people’s appreciation of previously recognised artworks and unrecognised artworks is different, depending on the social context, the degree of social development and so on. This requires us to teach and think critically, not just accepting, praising and criticising, but also arguing, counter-arguing and so on independently.

Borui Zhang’s blog is full of rationality and logic, she is very accurate in stating some very practical points today, indeed most artists are in the impractical theoretical school, it is practice that reveals new problems, and Borui Zhang is excellent in translating theory into practice, which has taught me a lot.

Borui Zhang, this is another promising blog post and provides a concise response to the questions asked of you this week. Similar to your previous post I encourage you to try and build academic references into the posts you are writing. For instance, you reference three different learning theories but don’t provide any definitions or sources to help contextualise your own reading and application of them to your own experience.
It is great to see the documentation of your response to the art assignment and how far you were able to develop your response to the brief. It would’ve been good to see you integrate some reflections on this process in relation to the learning theories you discussed as this would’ve provided an applied insight into how both the practice and theory meet one another as ‘praxis’.

i think how you have completed the art assignment is really impressive and detailed, with lots of knowledge and materials at hand. i like how you have used this assignment to highlight an issue that is important to you and relayed this issue creatively and thoughtfully. i agree that art cannot be an island of itself and carries an obligation to consider various social contexts, contexts we are all a part of as makers and participants.
