The standard design of a mug is a round, open-topped container, generally also with a flattened or rimmed base and handle. This basic shape can be found all over the world and throughout history. The first purpose made mugs were most likely carved out of wood before the advent of pottery allowed them to be more readily produced.

Mugs have been used throughout history not only for their practical function but also for decoration or as artwork. Highly decorative patterns and designs were used as an expression of the local culture or class. Certain rituals accompanying the making of different beverages also aided in the great variety of looks a mug or cup can take i.e. teacup and saucer and pour over coffee.

Today most mugs are mass produced and made out of ceramic materials. Modern mugs come in all shapes, sizes, styles, etc… and have even been adapted to fit busy lifestyles like with the travel mug. Although not generally first thought of as a revolutionary design the humble mug is still likely used millions, if not billions, of times a day yet its base design remains relatively unchanged.
