Mapping a sound scape

Title: I hear grandma is washing the beans

Materials: foaming clay, coke bottle, cotton pads, stone debris, paper, glue

Theme: childhood memory, love to my grandparents

Inspiration and initial thinking

The sound scape I mapped for this project is from the childhood memory, the sound of my grandma was washing the beans to make lunch for me, and I was lying on the sofa to wait for her. The sound was basically water flushing the beans, and my grandma’s hands trying to mix, stir them to clean the beans. Every time she was in the kitchen, I could hear the sound and the image would emerge in my brain.

For this work, I want to use a still object to represent a flowing movement in my brain (the image in my childhood). I used bottle as a foundation and used threads to connect the two object in order to show the movement of water and how the sound came into my mind when I was small. The reason why I used cotton  pads because it reminds me of the soft texture of sofa. I put texts on the cotton pads to represent the water movement of the image inside myself when my grandma was washing the beans. The spheres were made of light foaming clay, as they have a similar shape with beans. I also used stone debris to add up with the foaming clays, to show the teeth of my grandparent as their age is older, it started decaying. The reason why I used only black and white colour in this work is because for my memory, it’s always pale and I didn’t recognize how much my grandma loved me, the pale colour also shows my regret of my childhood.

Research

I researched about ceramic installations themed love. And I also looked at the text art as I wanted to use text to my work.

Process

Experiment

I tried different representation as I want to show the fluidity feeling of water, but also visually interesting, therefore I added texts and stone debris to the work. I want the look becomes subtle and tender, so I made these modifications to my work.

It’s an emotional piece, however I can see my representation still symbolic and the audience can’t easily get what I want to represent. So I wrote a poem for my work to provide more information to my audience.

“I hear grandma is washing the beans in the kitchen

Swearing I love you

I live you

You stay me

I seize love.”
