First Blog Post – Cornish Dilapidation

Cornwall is often associated with beaches, holiday-makers, and volatile weather. And although it is undeniably a beautiful county which I have lived in for as long as I can remember, it’s also home to one of the most volatile micro-economies in Europe. The introduction of COVID-19 related restrictions hit Cornwall hard, temporarily removing one of the county’s primary sources of income – tourism.

From March through August, I photographed areas in Cornwall which I knew of, or that were notorious for being in very poor condition. Why so many areas had been so aggressively worn and not replaced or patched-up, I wasn’t too sure, but I did know there was something comforting about these structures. No one has tried to half-heartedly repair them, demonstrating an ‘all-or-nothing’ mentality. Now at Edinburgh, I realize that not everywhere looks quite this abandoned (although many of the areas I found in Cornwall were somewhat off the beaten track).
