Working with the found object – Primary research

The found object I decided to work with was simply an empty plastic water bottle. Whilst plastic bottles are frequently used in sustainable sculpture in their original form I decided to focus on transforming the bottle’s shape and texture, focusing on the characteristic smooth and sleek form of the bottle. I decided to transform the object using heat, cutting and melting the bottle as heat gives the plastic a new glassy appearance and a highly texturised surface.

I also allowed the plastic to melt and reform in whichever shape it naturally became without shaping or forcing it in a particular way, as opposed to the regimented shape of the mass produced and uniform plastic bottle, creating the impression of a more organic form.
