Portfolio – Plastic Bottle Sculpture

Images and detail images of the plastic bottle sculpture.

I chose to take further my primary research – melting and transforming a plastic bottle as my found object – and replicating this using other plastic bottles and eventually combining them into a larger sculpture, as inspired by Mike Kelley’s central piece of his installation, “Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites”.

My aim was to transform the found object, focusing particularly on transforming the key physical properties and form associated with the plastic water bottle – texturising the bottle’s smooth and transparent surface and its mass produced uniformity into an organic and unique form.

Although I was inspired by Kelley’s work in terms of the idea of amassing and combining many similar found objects together, after creating the work it reminds me more aesthetically of blown glass artworks, particularly the Rotunda Chandelier by Dale Chihuly, exhibited in the V&A, as seen below.

  1. Hi Stella, just wanted to say that this sculpture you have made is amazing and so beautiful. I really like how you have created different shadows with lighting when photographing it. Was just wondering how you made such perfect round holes in the bottle?
