Semester 2 Study Plan

The photos taken during the Christmas break are a continuation of my Deforestation Project focusing on the environments surrounding me. Researching into my local area and the conservation efforts taking place; Bedgebury National Pinetum is a local 350 acre Wealden Country side, it is the largest world leading Pinetum. It focuses on species conservation, scientific advancements and understanding of conifers.

In the present day some conifers face their greatest threat. The impact of humans and increasing demands on our world’s finite resources are likely to force some trees into extinction. Over 400 conifer species are under threat, with only a handful of some of the most critically endangered still growing in the wild. Bedgebury’s Seed Nursery attempts to tackle this treat and revive species to save suffering spice as an effect of Anthropogenic demolition and climate change. Surplus seedlings and plants are distributed by Bedgebury to other botanic gardens and safe sites across the UK and Europe, and it provides seed to the Millennium Seed Bank.

The new series of images focus on the themes of abstraction and entanglement. The black and white series enables structures, shapes and twisting branches to create graphic images. The warped intracy draws connotations with the consequences of entangled human-nature relation. Connected branches create a dependant system.

This Term:

  • Explore local environment and continue tree abstractions; how does it relate? Importance of location? What method am I adopting? How will these be viewed?

  • Previous Ice experiments; paused at the moment, due to Covid inaccessibility to Edinburgh prints and equipment- try new strand…

  • Ice experiments- Look into taking photos of local environment through ice sheets to distort the environment? Look at Thomas Finkler

  • Explore soundscapes, video and text; How do these effect my work? How will the viewer experience these?

  • Continue with the incorporation of poetry and text; how can the text educate, inform whilst aiding the narrative of the imagery?

  • Explore presentation and audience interaction; where is it intended to be viewed? how can this be achieved on a online format?
