Improving understandings of LGBTQ+ suicide and suicide prevention in the UK.

The Rain Within The Rainbow

The Team

The Rain Within The Rainbow is led by me, Dr Hazel Marzetti. I am a suicide researcher at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Health in Social Sciences. I have a long-term interest in LGBTQ+ suicide and completed my PhD on the subject of LGBTQ+ young people’s suicidal thoughts and attempts in Scotland (supervised by Prof Lisa McDaid, Prof Rich Mitchell and Prof Rory O’Connor, at the University of Glasgow). I also led specialist work on LGBTQ+ suicide prevention as part of the Leverhulme funded Suicide in/as Politics project (led by Prof Amy Chandler and Dr Ana Jordan). Outside of work I love reading, crafting, gardening, watching trashy TV shows, and walking my very lovely dog.

Heads up about halfway through the second year of this project I will be recruiting for a post-doctoral researcher to join me – so watch this space! In the meantime I am supported by a fantastic (and growing) advisory board:

  • Rebecca Hoffman, LGBT Health and Wellbeing
  • Paul Daly, LGBT Youth Scotland
  • Rob Kelly, Public Health Scotland
  • Dr Brendan Dunlop,
  • Prof Liz McDermott, University of Birmingham
  • Prof Rory O’Connor, University of Glasgow
  • Prof Yvette Taylor, Strathclyde University
  • Prof John Oliffe, University of British Colombia
  • Dr Ian Marsh, Cantebury Christ Church University

They will shortly be joined by a panel of experts with lived experience who will help to steer the project’s direction.
