Key Themes
The PlayFair Steps has four key themes:
- Myth-busting
- Staff engagement
- Visibility and accountability
- Data driven decision making and reporting
Myth-busting
The PlayFair Steps initiative has a unique position as part of a large research institution, surrounded by the skills and knowledge of faculty and researchers at the University of Edinburgh. The University is a world-class place of education, and one of the themes of the PlayFair Steps is recognising the importance of educating others and ourselves on equality and diversity matters.
Staff engagement
The initiative works to give staff the opportunity to voice their issues and concerns which the Equality and Diversity team can address in Information Services. Getting staff involved in suggesting and making changes is one of the key tenets of the PlayFair Steps initiative, in order to develop a more attractive, inclusive workplace.
Visibility and accountability
PlayFair Steps continuously establishes equality and diversity actions which are both visible and accountable, to make it clear that every individual, of every gender, race, or other characteristic, is supported by an inclusive, fair workplace.
Data driven decision making and reporting
The initiative began following some initial data-gathering in 2015 in the form of a gender equality survey. Since then, the PlayFair Steps has been focused on using data to make informed decisions in areas such as policy-making, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training.
