Year 5 careers fair: medical education directorate

Representing the Medical education directorate are Dr Cathleen Holligan and Dr Daniel Day.

Dr Cathleen Holligan

Dr Cathleen HolliganHi I’m Cat, I am a Clinical Teaching Fellow working for my second year within the Medical Education Directorate.
My background is in Psychiatry having completed my core training here in the South East. I hope to pursue higher training in General Adult or Psychiatry of Old Age.

Within MED I am interested in helping doctors in training develop as clinical educators and hope to improve this through our new Clinician Development Programme. I am passionate about junior doctor and medical student wellbeing and hope to build on the progress made during the Covid Pandemic.

I also support REACH, a widening participation programme which works to increase diversity amongst medical students.

Outside MED I enjoy being in the outdoors; camping, walking and wild swimming.

Dr Daniel Day

Dr Daniel DayMy name is Dan Day and I’m an Emergency Medicine Specialty Registrar in South-East Scotland. From August 2020 I will be working for a year as a Clinical Fellow in Medical Education in NHS Lothian’s Medical Education Directorate, based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

I have enjoyed a varied training pathway to date. After graduating from Newcastle University Medical School, I completed foundation programme and ACCS training in the North-East of England. I undertook additional posts in Intensive Care Medicine in Oxford before moving to Edinburgh for higher specialty training in Emergency Medicine. In addition to this, I have worked in a number of more unusual posts around the world, including as a doctor for the UN in Somaliland, for the Himalayan Rescue Association in Nepal and for the Central Australian Retrieval service, as well as multiple expedition medical roles.

My particular interests within Emergency Medicine are medical education, point-of-care ultrasound, critical care in the ED and remote area medicine. Outside of work, I enjoy being in the outdoors and spend my free time running, mountain biking, climbing and ski-touring.

I have always loved teaching within medicine. I am currently a Clinical Tutor Associate at the University of Edinburgh. I am working towards a Masters in Clinical Education and am excited by the opportunity to learn and develop new skills during my Clinical Fellowship year.
