Hello I’m Phei, I’m currently a 4th year medical student. I grew up in the Borneo part of Malaysia. One of my favourite places and running spots in Edinburgh is the Holyrood Park.
As a current student at Edinburgh, I can confidently say that choosing this university has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. From the vibrant city life to the world-class education, Edinburgh offers a unique blend of academic excellence and cultural richness.
Here’s why I think Edinburgh is the perfect place to shape your future and create unforgettable experiences.
1.The course
Edinburgh Medical School offers a robust medical curriculum that builds a solid biomedical foundation in the preclinical years. This is built upon through lectures, tutorials and problem-based learning (PBL). The comprehensive anatomy tutorials are particularly immersive, conducted in small groups using well-prosected specimens.
The course also prepares you to be a holistic doctor by exploring the social and ethical aspects of medicine. In the clinical years, you will rotate through different placements, applying your knowledge and skills in real-world environments, with access to a clinical skills centre for more hands-on practice.
2.Research opportunities
Edinburgh is a leading hub for world-class preclinical and clinical research, equipped with modern research facilities, such as the Queen’s Medical Research Institute (QMRI). Choosing Edinburgh Medical School means becoming part of a community that is shaping the future of medicine.
The range of research work, from preclinical discoveries to clinical applications, will provide you with unparalleled opportunities to contribute to healthcare advancements on a global scale. Whether your interest lies in understanding the molecular basis of diseases or in developing clinical therapies, Edinburgh offers a dynamic and supportive environment to achieve your goals.
3. Intercalation in Year 3
The intercalated degree between preclinical and clinical years allows you to focus on a specific degree and a research topic, giving you a deep dive into a specific area of interest. It builds upon the research skills and knowledge learnt through the research evidence-based medicine (REBM) module in preclinical years.
It also facilitates engagement in research in the clinical years to let you build a strong academic portfolio, and potentially obtain publications that will provide a competitive edge in speciality training applications. Regardless of your level of interest for academia, the skills learnt during intercalation are relevant to all medical graduates, as understanding research is key to advancing your understanding of disease and optimal patient care.
4. Living in Edinburgh
Edinburgh is not just a place to study; it is an amazing place to live and thrive. The city is steeped in history, culture and natural beauty. From the historic architecture to the world-renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe, there is something to explore all year round.
The YoungScot free bus travel scheme for those under 22 makes it easy to discover the city and all of Scotland. Whether you’re interested in museums, the arts, or simply soaking in the stunning landscapes, Edinburgh has something for everyone.
5.Societies and community
The friendly and inclusive student community here makes it easy to feel at home. With more than 290 student-led societies to choose from, there are no shortage of opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and pursue your interests outside of medical school.
For me, the strong sense of community, combined with the school’s excellent wellbeing and academic resources, provides a balanced and fulfilling student life.
