Society Profile: Edinburgh Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

Two students from Friends of MSF stand behind an information tablet with flyers and info on it. They are at a busy student society fair, surrounded by signage and people in background. The Edinburgh Friends of MSF society is a student led society which aims to raise awareness about Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and what they are doing in the field. Our goals are to engage the University community through a variety of activities, including insightful talks, film screenings, and social fundraising events.

Upcoming events

On Saturday 23 November, we will be hosting our 9th annual Humanitarian Conference. This conference will feature individuals directly involved with MSF, and will also include interactive breakout rooms, offering participants the chance to engage more deeply with key humanitarian topics and ask questions.

After the conference, we will be hosting Jazz Night with the Edinburgh University Jazz Society! (More information to come, follow our instagram @fomsf.edinburgh for updates).

What is MSF?

Medecins Sans Frontieres, also known as Doctors without Borders, is a non-profit, international humanitarian organisation which was established in 1971. It aims to deliver medical assistance to those which are affected by conflict, disease and epidemics, natural disasters, or lack of access to healthcare.

MSF teams are made up of healthcare professionals, logistic and administrative staff that are guided by medical ethics, the values of neutrality, independence, and impartiality.

How does MSF operate?

A red and white logo with the name of the Society plus a human figure on red background. Each circumstance is unique, and therefore requires independent evaluations to determine medical needs and assess what assistance to provide. MSF programmes follow similar practices surrounding emergency response, medical care and innovations, supply and logistics, and quality of medicine.

MSF is currently operating in more than 70 countries around the world. This includes places such as Gaza (Palestine), Lebanon, Sudan, and Mali.

Why you should get involved?

Whether by organising events, raising awareness or helping with fundraising, each contribution has a direct positive effect on the work of MSF. Joining Friends of MSF is an opportunity to take action on issues you care about and be part of a global effort which brings medical assistance to the world’s most vulnerable parts.
