Society in focus: Edinburgh University Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EUSCTS)

Hello! Here at EUSCTS we aim to provide likeminded individuals with a platform to build on confidence, skills, and knowledge. To keep it short, we want to educate and mentor the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons!

Cardiothoracic surgery is a specialty which encompasses surgery of the heart, lungs, and other organs of the thorax. Although we are a niche society, the field of CTS encompasses the foundations of many other medical and surgical specialties, such as cardiology, respiratory medicine, critical care, anaesthesia, radiology, and of course surgery!

But cardiothoracic surgery is too competitive…

If you have been looking at the specialty training competition ratios, you will know cardiothoracic surgery ranked as the 2nd most competitive (45:1)…that doesn’t sound appealing does it?

However, contrary to the stereotype, cardiothoracic surgeons across the country have been incredibly inspiring and encouraging, providing fantastic mentorship to our members. We know that most candidates who get a training number have been building up their portfolios since medical school. So, with the right network and support behind you, anything is possible!

What if I’m not interested in cardiothoracic surgery?

That is completely fine! Cardiothoracic surgery is a big commitment to take on, so we highly encourage you to dip into related specialties to understand where your interests best lie. You are more than welcome to join our society to learn more about the specialty and yourself!
