Director’s preview: Medics Musical 2022

A sneak preview of the 2022 Medics Musical, Edinburgh’s Doc Talent!

Aoife O'Neill, musical directorHi there, my name is Aoife O’Neill and I’m the director of this year’s Medics Musical. Being a part of the musical is something that myself, all of the executive committee and all of our cast have been looking forward to since we were in first year. Given the circumstances of the last few years – we’re even more excited to bring back something that’s become a bit of an Edinburgh institution! Every year, fifth year medics come together to create a script, and put on a show with music supplied by our very own band. This year, we are so excited to bring you…Edinburgh’s Doc Talent!

Edinburgh’s Doc Talent is an original script, composed by our writing team, which follows the journey of final year medics thrown into the spotlight. Funding cuts have hit again… and they all must compete to be in with a chance to become Edinburgh’s only FY. A script where Finals become Footloose, the SJT becomes Do-Re-Mi… yet still, the rugby boys wear tweed. All our favourite medical school stereotypes hit the stage – inevitably, chaos ensues. With an on-stage cast of only fifth years (and two very dedicated sixth years!)

We have a super talented cast that we’re really excited about, and I’d love to introduce you to them… but I don’t have the word count to do them justice! Please head over to our Instagram or our Facebook page where you can meet everyone (links below).

The cast of Edinburgh's Doc Talent!

As the director, I’ve been working closely with the rest of the executive committee over the past seven months. Watching our musical director, Raphael Gould, and our assistant musical director, Elizabeth Suen, work so hard to arrange music and coordinate a band, whose members span across the entire university. Our executive producer, Florence Fenner making more Excel spreadsheets than I thought humanly possible… And our head choreographer, Sammy McKinlay, is working so hard to make sure it all looks good on stage. As rehearsals are ramping up, it is all coming together, and we’ll hope you come to see our cast perform.

This year, we are raising money for LGBT Health and Wellbeing Scotland. They are dedicated to building a Scotland wherein LGBT people have equal access to support and resources informed by their needs, and opportunities to participate in and connect with their community. This is a cause that is extremely important to us, and so if you’re reading this, and can’t make it, we would really appreciate any donations to them via our gofundme page (link below).

While getting this musical together has not been entirely straightforward (we’re looking at you, Covid!)…We have been so lucky to have been working in collaboration with fellow medical school societies, including the Endocrine Society, the Homelessness and Inclusion Health Society, and with a special, special thanks to the LGBT+ Medics. Without the help of these societies, there is no way we’d be able to run the show this year. Another thanks to Hannah Robinson for creating our fabulous poster.

Our show is taking place at Assembly Roxy from the March 30 to April 2. Tickets are £11/£13 (student/non-student) – and are available to buy at the link below.

Hope to see you there!
