Rugby players in actionEdinburgh University Medics Rugby Club is a long-established and proudly traditional club, with records stretching back to 1987. Our distinctive red, yellow and maroon strip, said to represent blood, pus, and liver, echoes this strong heritage.

The club is built around a core spine of medical students, but we remain fully inclusive and warmly welcome players from all years and from outside the Medical School who want to enjoy competitive rugby in a friendly and supportive environment. Training sessions are held twice a week, complemented by a lively social calendar with events every Saturday night, from team meals to the legendary Au le Poulet. The club also hosts an annual alumni game, bringing past and present players together.

We run a European tour each year, giving members the chance to play rugby abroad.

Community ties

We also take pride in our strong ties to the local community, supported by sponsorship from a wide range of Edinburgh businesses. We also would like to thank GP Plus (our main sponsor) for their continued support and encouragement.

The club currently competes in the competitive Men’s Arnold Clark East League 3, as well as the East Bowl Cup. We are currently sitting fifth in the league and have recently enjoyed some good form and hope to get our third win on the trot this weekend at Peffermill – 2pm kick off vs Trinity. During the summer, the team takes part in various local 7s tournaments, where we remained unbeaten throughout last season.

A recent highlight was lifting the SNIMS (Scottish and Northern Irish Medics ) Cup, held in Dundee this November. Five medical schools, four from Scotland and Queen’s University Belfast, competed in the annual tournament. Edinburgh claimed the title after a hard-fought 7–0 victory over Dundee in the final, bringing the trophy back to the capital for the first time since 2019 and securing our position as the best medical school rugby team in the country.

Rugby players in a tight scrumClub captain Archie Budge said: “This win really shows the strength of the squad this season. For a few of us in sixth year, myself included, this was our last chance to lift the trophy, so finally achieving it means a huge amount. I’m incredibly proud of the lads.”

The tournament suited our squad, with all players having a great tournament – however notable mentions to:
• Ben Morrison (Year 6) – for his incredible work in defence. Winning countless turnovers.
• Jack Hamilton (Year 4) – Managing to secure a game winning try against St Andrews.
• Luka Morrison (Year 5) – Superb work rate on and off the ball.
• Tristan Triviera (Masters Student) – A true utility forward contributing hugely to defensive and offensive efforts.

We’re always on the lookout for new members. Whether you’re here for the rugby, the socials, or a bit of both, head over to our Instagram @EUMRFC and drop us a message. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience.

Thank you to club photographers Dr Potter and Rahul Patel (year 6 student) for taking these great pics.
