Here at EUVSS, we aim to bring together students with an interest in vascular surgery and the wider vascular sciences. Our goal is to provide a platform to develop surgical skills, deepen understanding, and inspire the next generation of vascular surgeons through teaching, workshops, and mentorship.
What is vascular surgery?
Vascular surgery is a specialty focused on the surgical management of vascular diseases. Working with arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels, vascular surgery ranges from minimally invasive procedures, like angioplasty and stenting, to open surgeries like arteriovenous fistula and bypass surgeries.
With the opportunity to make fast and lifelong changes to the lives of patients, vascular surgery is an exciting, fulfilling specialty that is growing in relevance— with cardiometabolic diseases reaching a global epidemic level, and cardiovascular disease representing the leading cause of death worldwide.
But vascular surgery sounds intense…
It’s true that vascular surgery can be demanding, but that’s exactly what makes it so rewarding! The specialty attracts surgeons who thrive on precision, quick decision-making, and teamwork. Many consultants and trainees across Scotland are incredibly supportive of students, offering mentorship, portfolio guidance, and research opportunities. With the right preparation and curiosity, vascular surgery is a path open to anyone passionate about saving limbs… and lives.
How competitive is vascular surgery?
Vascular surgery remains a competitive surgical speciality in 2025, with a nationwide applicant to post ratio of 6.43 : 1 (225 applications for 35 posts). The Scottish deaneries collectively offer around eight to ten speciality training (ST3) posts each year, concentrated in the major vascular centres in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen.
This competitiveness reflects the speciality’s growing appeal, driven by expanding hybrid theatre capacity, increased endovascular case volumes, and strong links to research. For motivated trainees, Scotland offers a dynamic and well-supported training environment where innovation and collaboration continue to shape the future of vascular care.
