HCP-Med Q&A: Lucy Weston

Head shot of Lucy smiling with decorative lights in the backgroundTell us about your current job
I currently work as an intensive care nurse in the Highlands. I work 1:1 with ventilated patients requiring multiple organ support. This involves giving kind and compassionate care as well as in-depth knowledge to manage complex lifesaving interventions. I love it!

Why HCP-Med?
I love learning, I always have. Throughout school I wanted to be a doctor but never got the grades due to unforeseen circumstances. However, I have always had this little voice in the back of my head asking ‘what if?’. When I saw this programme, I thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to pursue my dream whilst also continuing to work in my job that I love.

What are you enjoying most about the programme?
The programme is very flexible. Tough, but flexible. It allows me to work and study at the same time, enabling me to earn a wage and apply my learnings to the things I do on a daily basis at work.

How have you found the transition back to studying?
I did my Honours year last year (for my nursing) which meant transitioning back into university life, so, starting this programme felt easier. Adjusting to the type of content delivery is trickier, but once you’ve cracked this, you’re winning.

What are your classmates and teaching team like?
It’s great being surrounded by so many other healthcare professionals. There is so much experience and knowledge between us all which is great! The academic staff and teaching team have been wonderful too, very supportive and understanding of circumstances.

What is your top tip for future applicants?
Be yourself! Nobody is trying to trip you up and being a kind and caring person goes the longest way.
