How to balance studies and fun

Hasan standing in front of illuminated skyscrapers at nightHi, I’m Hasan, a Year 6 medical student from Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Congratulations on securing your place at the University of Edinburgh. You are about to embark on an exciting journey, one that will be intellectually stimulating, challenging and immensely rewarding. However, while the pressure to do well in your exams is high, university life is also about making memories, forging lifelong friendships and experiencing new adventures.

So, how can you strike the perfect balance between your studies and fun? Here’s a guide to help you navigate your first year.

Join societies and clubs

One of the best ways to have fun at university is by getting involved in societies and clubs. Edinburgh has a wide range of student societies catering to various interests from sports to cultural societies to common interests. My favourites included medics hockey and PakSoc.

Joining a society not only provides a break from your studies but also helps you meet new people, develop skills and make the most of your time at Edinburgh. Be sure to check out the Welcome Fair for University-wide societies and the medical societies at the RMS rooms. These will provide opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities, attend social events and connect with peers in other year groups.

Master time management

The key to balancing studies and social life is effective time management. Medical school is known for its rigorous workload, so it’s essential to plan your time wisely. Start by creating a weekly schedule that includes your lectures, study sessions and other commitments. I like tools like Notion which can be used to compile your notes as well. More recently, I have reverted to a diary planner but do whatever works for you to keep track of tasks and deadlines. Allocate time for studying but also be flexible as commitments change. Equally make sure you carve out time for relaxation and social activities – these are just as important for your wellbeing.

Embrace the power of study groups

Studying doesn’t have to be a chore. Creating a study group can make learning more interactive and enjoyable. It’s a chance to discuss difficult concepts, share resources and motivate each other. Just make sure your study sessions stay focused – use them to clarify doubts and review material rather than a natter. Your peers are one of your greatest assets in medical school. Having people who understand the pressure of your course can provide emotional support and encourage a healthy balance between study and leisure.

Prioritise self-care

Your health should always be a top priority. While it’s tempting to pull all-nighters, especially before exams, remember that adequate sleep, regular exercise and a balanced diet are crucial for maintaining your energy and focus. Edinburgh is a beautiful city with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Whether it’s a walk up Arthur’s seat, a stroll through the Meadows or a run to Portobello, regular exercise can help you unwind and keep stress at bay.

Stay flexible and adaptable – rebalance as needed

The demands of medical school can be unpredictable. Whether it’s a last-minute revision session or an unexpected social invitation, being flexible with your schedule is key. Sometimes, taking a spontaneous break is just what you need to recharge. As long as you’re keeping up with your studies, don’t be afraid to adjust your priorities occasionally – spontaneous moments often lead to some of the best plans.

Regular reflection of your work-life balance is essential. Medical school will challenge you, and it’s normal for the balance between studies and fun to shift from time to time. If you find yourself feeling stressed or stretched too thin, take a step back and reassess your commitments. Perhaps you need to dedicate more time to your studies or give yourself permission to relax and enjoy to vibrant life that Edinburgh offers.

Balancing the demands of medical school with the opportunities for fun and exploration in Edinburgh is no small feat, but it’s entirely possible. With careful planning, effective study strategies, and a willingness to embrace both the challenges and joys of university life, you can thrive academically while enjoying everything this incredible city has to offer. So, dive into your studies with enthusiasm, but don’t forget to make time for the unforgettable experiences that will shape your time here.
