Wilderness Medicine Society is for students who love the outdoors and have an interest in medicine. We host talks from experts in fields such as pre-hospital care and retrieval medicine, military medicine, mountain medicine and expedition medicine where we learn tips and tricks to follow in their footsteps.
Additionally, we hold training nights to gain pre-hospital and wilderness medicine skills and knowledge. We also have regular trips in the gorgeous Scottish countryside – they are a perfect mini-break from the busy city life in Edinburgh. Together we go skiing, hiking, mountain biking and camping.
Once a year, we pay a visit to Firbush, Edinburgh University’s picturesque outdoor activity centre on the shore of Loch Tay. Here we do water sports such as kayaking and canoeing and various mountain activities, whilst dining like kings and sleeping in Norwegian pine log cabins. Our favourite activity here is to kayak to the local village for a hot chocolate (or pint!).
Weekly, we host climbing sessions at the university gym and have equipment to also climb outdoors. This is great for experienced climbers or total beginners. Annually, we take two teams to ‘Wild Trials’, a wilderness medicine competition between students from universities across the UK where you learn lots and have a blast. Overall, we are a society set up to combine a love of the outdoors with an interest in medicine, however anyone and everyone is welcome at all of our events.
