Remote and Rural Medicine Society

Remote and Rural Medicine Society logoHi, we’re Edinburgh University Remote and Rural Medicine Society.

98% of Scotland’s land mass is classified as rural, and almost 20% of the Scottish population resides in these locations. Patients should receive the same high-quality care regardless of location. Remote and rural medicine is a branch of medicine which aims to meet the needs of these remote and rural communities.

It is an area of medicine that undoubtedly involves unique challenges and experiences but also many benefits, which we are keen to share with you!

Here at Edinburgh University Remote and Rural Medicine Society, we:

  • Host talks with doctors and other healthcare professionals working in a variety of remote and rural settings, to highlight the opportunities R&R medicine can offer
  • Host talks with medical students who have completed R&R placements at medical school, to explore the benefits and drawbacks of these placements
  • Provide information and support for students trying to organise their own remote and rural placement
  • Lead a group to the annual National Remote and Rural Medicine Conference (Fort William 2021) – always great fun and good opportunity to explore rural locations.

Overall, we are a friendly group of medical students who are all interested in R&R medicine and all the opportunities and adventures it can offer. Past students have highlighted the high quality teaching they received, how welcomed and integrated they became both in the healthcare team and the local community during their time on rural placements, as well as the obvious benefits of opportunities for hiking, climbing and other outdoor activities!
