The cryptogamiacs on tour - this time Cairn Gorm

Cryptogamiacs, that’s who we are. Manic about cryptogams, that is what we are.

Cryptogams are plant-like organisms with extraordinary features. Cryptogams reproduce without flowers or seeds. Instead, they keep their reproduction (gametes) hidden (hence the crypto) from plain sight, making them secretive creatures to study. Cryptogams are able to withstand the harshest environmental conditions and are found in habitats where no vascular plant could go, from icy glaciers and cold deserts to lush temperate rainforests. Despite this amazing resilience, cryptogams are sensitive to even the most subtle changes in their environment, making them one of the most exciting sentinels of climate change.
