Emmanuella Asemota is in S6 at Holy Rood RC High School and has just spent four weeks at IGC gaining some valuable lab experience.

She came to IGC as part of the Career Ready scheme which aims to help students develop their skills and attributes for career success.

As part of the scheme, Emmanuella, who turns 17 in August and is studying Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Criminology, is being mentored by Waad AlBawardi.

“I found out about the Career Ready programme when my year head in S5 introduced this to me and my year mates,” says Emmanuella. “The school coordinator was also a teacher at our school.

“I got matched with Waad through the Career Ready application. I was told to list the subjects I do, my hobbies, and my future dream career which is to be a Dental Therapist/Hygienist. In this career, Biology plays a huge part – hence the matching to Waad as she works in the Biology department.

“This programme has made me gain some more knowledge about Biology in general and made me improve some of my skills like time management and adaptability.

“So far, I have done experiments and explored topics on bacterial culture, plasmid purification, plasmid restriction digestion and gel electrophoresis.

“My favourite task so far has been plasmid restriction digestion.”

When she finishes school, Emmanuella hopes to do an Oral Health Science course at university in order to achieve her dream of becoming a Dental Therapist/Hygienist in the future.
