Cancer Biology and Precision Oncology Masters programme

Head shot of Ola Elbadry

By Ola Elbadry, a first-year Masters student in Cancer Biology and Precision Oncology (online learning) and Edinburgh Global Online Learning Masters Scholarship awardee.

I completed my undergraduate studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Alexandria University, Egypt, where I developed an avid interest in cancer biology. My goal was to gain a profound understanding of the intricate mechanisms underlying cancer at both the cellular and molecular levels, as well as delving deeper into pharmacology, drug delivery and development of novel therapeutics.

As a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, I’ve gained valuable skills in areas like cell culture, RNA and DNA extraction, qPCR, and handling laboratory animals. This has equipped me with the practical skills and knowledge essential for navigating the complexities of cancer and has solidified that the scope of my future studies and research will be about cancer biology.

When I came across the Cancer Biology and Precision Oncology Masters programme, I was captivated by the comprehensive courses offered. The curriculum extensively covers the hallmarks of cancer, etiology and treatments, while advancing into targeted therapies based on the genetic and molecular profiles of individual tumours, leading to personalised treatment approaches. The focus on drug design and mechanism of action, coupled with insights from drug discovery stories and collaboration with healthcare professionals, will bridge the gap between bench and bedside.

I value the perfect balance between the flexibility and extensive curriculum offered by the online Masters programme, allowing me to adapt my studies to my schedules without compromising on academic depth.

This programme is truly an eye-opener, introducing me to both foundational concepts and the latest advancements in the field. I’m excited about the knowledge and skills I’ll gain as I prepare to pursue a PhD and specialise in a specific area of cancer research.
